IPIECA – The global oil and gas industry association for environmental and social issues

Stakeholder dialogue to inform strategic planning

IPIECA was formed in 1974 following the launch of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It is the only global association involving both the upstream and downstream oil and gas industry on environmental and social issues and forms the industry’s principal channel of communication with the United Nations. IPIECA membership covers over half the world’s oil production.

In 2011, IPIECA asked us to convene and facilitate a multi-stakeholder dialogue to inform their regular strategic review process and input to the Rio+20 Earth Summit in June 2012.

We worked with IPIECA to convene some 50 participants at a dedicated two-day dialogue event in Rome in February 2012. The participants were drawn from investors, NGOs, multi-lateral institutions, academics and thought-leaders around the world, who were identified for their ability to speak to the breadth and depth of environmental and social issues facing the oil and gas industry.

The two-day dialogue was designed to stimulate debate on the major strategic challenges for the sector in the short and longer term, and to build a shared understanding of future options for IPIECA regarding: its structure, function, ambition, values, mission, technical program, priorities, services, governance and partnerships.

Our approach involved working with IPIECA to identify and select long and short-lists of participants; manage the invitation process; develop terms of reference and briefing materials; facilitate bespoke online surveys and pre-meeting webinars to ensure participants felt involved and engaged before the event; create the agenda and presentation materials; facilitate the dialogue; capture results and analysis. We presented the key highlights and insights to IPIECA’s Executive Committee the day after the dialogue.
